Tackling the big issues

COMIC singing trio the Ballpoint Penguins enjoy tackling all the big topics, such as the joys of flying economy class and wonders of Tupperware.

Formed in 2003, the “gently sardonic” group features Tim Fisher, Kerry Egan and Colleen Dixon.

Singing mainly pop, gospel, blues and barbershop styles, the trio likes to keep fun the focus of their shows, with an occasional Monty Python number included for good measure.

Originally meeting as part of the same community choir, Fisher said it was Dixon that “cooked up” the idea for an a cappella comedy trio as a way to perform at the annual Fairbridge Festival in Pinjarra.

“When we started, I was the only one working and now I’ve retired early and they’re both working, so the shoe is now on the other flipper,” Fisher said.

The group has kept busy performing at the recent Illawarra Folk Festival in NSW and recording a second CD, Flights of Fancy, which they will launch with a performance at the Charles Hotel in North Perth this Sunday from 7pm.

Taking six months from start to finish, the album called for group members to set aside each Sunday night for about four of those months to record tracks at a Bayswater studio.

“I think enough time had passed since recording our first album in 2006 – we’d forgotten about the pain,” Fisher said.
