TWO local actors are preparing to hit the stage in a world premiere. Kalamunda’s George Shevtsov and Midland’s Steve Turner are among cast members in Deckchair Theatre’s production of Grace – an adaptation of Robert Drewe’s novel of the same t

The show will premiere at Victoria Hall in Fremantle on Saturday as part of the Perth International Arts Festival.

Shevtsov said the process of condensing Humphrey Bower’s six-hour adaptation of the book down to a more manageable stage time took a few weeks.

“The book is a fantastic read,” he said.

“We got the many stories that we thought were crucial to the novel but it was a challenge to adapt the novel to stage.

“It’s a crime thriller and the audience has to solve a mystery, to a certain extent.”

Shevtsov’s role is one of three central characters around which the plot revolves but he said other sub-plots were woven in.

“It becomes quite fascinating.”

Shevtsov’s past work includes Red Shoes and Things That Remain with Link Dance Co, despite his assertion that he’s “not a dancer”.

“I did a little bit of movement,” he said.

He is best known for his role as Ken Sherry in the film Love Serenade, which won the Camera D’Or award at Cannes Film Festival in 1996.

Turner has previously starred in an adaptation of Tim Winton’s The Turning, and won roles in productions of Speed the Plow, Lady Chatterley’s Lover and Macbeth.

Grace will run until March 6. Tickets are available through Deckchair Theatre online or by calling 9430 4771.
