A FIREWORKS display at the newly opened Belmont Bunnings Warehouse left one resident fuming as debris from the explosions damaged her car.

Rebecca Lievense lives next to the hardware giant where the fireworks were fired from on Friday, August 13, and said ash came down on her two-storey townhouse and car.

“It was just showering my house, covering everything with soot, ash and combustibles,” she said. “There are pock marks in the paint of the car.”

Ms Lievense said she complained to the Bunnings store and was told she could have the damage to her property fixed and then they would assess the payment.

“The whole conversation with Bunnings had been around telling me to fix it and then paying me back; they haven’t told me how long it will take to make a claim,” she said.

The fireworks contractor used by Bunnings received all relevant approvals to hold the fireworks display, including from the City of Belmont.

Belmont Mayor Glenys Godfrey said the City originally refused the display application, as it was felt the nearby residents had been impacted by various noise sources over the preceding years while the Bunnings development was being undertaken.

However the City reconsidered when the applicant said they would use quieter fireworks and pointed out that there would be other noise sources later in the evening.

Bunnings declined to comment when contacted by the Southern Gazette.

Shame on you Wesfarmers (bunnings owners) shame on the council for allowing the fireworks to happen . Seems like fireworks are required for every 2 bit happening these days. Keep them for skyworks.
