KWINANA indigenous artists have some of their unique work on display at the Albert Windie Art Exhibition as part of NAIDOC Week celebrations.

The displays at the TOK shop in the Kwinana Hub Shopping Centre highlights the work of artists from the Medina Aboriginal Cultural Community centre.

Exhibition co-ordinator and art teacher Gordon Buckley said the exhibition was a showcase of the work of local Aboriginal artists in a combination of indigenous and modern forms.

“It’s an indigenous and modern mix of art; it’s traditional with some experimentation,” he said.

There have been five exhibitions during the past seven years, achieving sales worth $20,000.

Aboriginal Elder of the Year in 2008, Theresa Walley, has created images depicting the feminine for the current exhibition, centred on dancing women around a fire.

Other paintings depict Aboriginal symbols and dreaming stories, which include the spirit man.

Some of the local artists featured are Deborah Walley, Lindsay Calyun and Norman Yarran.

The exhibition is named in honour of Albert Windie, a local artist who started painting at 70 and sold his first major work to the Kwinana Arts Centre.

The display ends tomorrow.
