A DEFENCELESS, five-year-old shar-pei dog, no more than 50cm tall, was brutally slain in a suburban backyard and discovered by a nine-year-old boy.

Family pet Maggie was left slumped in a pool of blood in Shiel Way in Hamersley, the result of an attack that has horrified the RSPCA.

Community has obtained a picture of the aftermath – a beloved family pet with two puncture wounds to her neck, a broken and stabbed rear leg, and huge chunks of fur missing from her torso.

It appears the killers used weapons to inflict the wounds, sometime between Saturday morning of March 10 and the afternoon of the following day.

RSPCA spokesman Tim Mayne confirmed the agency was investigating the incident and said those culpable faced stiff penalties.

“There is every indication that this is a horrible case of cruelty… a callous, deliberate act.”

Maggie’s previous owners, Janet and Martin Gillespie, are fly-in, fly-out workers at BHP’s nickel mine in Leinster. They work two weeks on, one week off and three months ago reluctantly decided to adopt out their beloved pet to friends so the dog could be better looked after.

New owners Scott and Lily Preston were away that weekend and had dropped the dog off at the home of Amanda Gillespie, the daughter of Janet and Martin.

Mr Preston said his young son Cameron made the chilling find when he went to pick up the dog on Sunday (March 11) about 5.30pm.

He said his son was “was a bit scarred” from the ordeal, but it had traumatised his wife Lily the most. So much so she was unable to go to work for two days.

Mr Preston said should the perpetrators be caught, they should be heavily fined, as well as named and shamed.

“The public should be made aware of who these animals are. There should be some sort of criminal charges.”

He said although Maggie had only been with them for a few months, she was a much-loved family member.

“We had her for a week on a trial basis and we fell in love with her,” he said.

A distraught Mrs Gillespie told the Stirling Times that she had concerns for what the offenders were capable of. “They’re ill; they need help,” she said.

“It’s too horrific… to inflict such cruelty on something so defenceless. What are they going to do next – hurt somebody? Is this how serial killers start off?”

“I pray that it was a quick death; that the puncture in her neck killed her (first),” Mrs Gillespie said.

The penalties under the Animal Welfare Act for such a crime are a fine of $50,000 and five years’ jail if convicted.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the RSPCA on 1300 278 3589.

Totally agree with Lee 20/3/12 heavier penalties but the judges are far too weak to deal out tough penalties..Just wonder how they would react if it was one of their children or loving pet..Wake up Australia toughen up all laws stop pandering to the scum of the earth and dish out the same treatment on them, lets see how they like being treated cruelly..Tougher laws for all animal cruelty cases not a tap on the wrist either they need a good hard hit in the pocket and a goal cell with murders to boot.

Adopted by my Shar Pei

The Shar Pei are infamous for not barking, of course they can if 'they' wanted to, but I find that my Shar Pei does'nt bark at anything or anyone even if our Boxer does!
Stop blaming the owners, they did what they thought best for Maggie. What a dreadful ordeal for their children to witness. My thoughts go out to the family. And I would hope that 'someone' who knows who did this, will be brave enough to contact the RSPCA and/or the Police. No more pain now Maggie. XX

I agree Robbie, the people who were 'dog sitting' couldnt give a exact time when this occured, obviously the dog was left alone for some time. How did these sickos know the dog was there - was the dog howling or barking because it had been abandoned into another persons back yard? If so maybe the Ranger should of been called to go to such extreme lengths to 'quieten' the dog is horrendous. Were these sickos trying to break into the property? In any case they were trespassing and should of not been there. Hope you find them and throw the book at them RSPCA, mind you the judge when it goes to court will probably let them off with a good behaviour bond...

This is so sad, an innocent little dog savaged. The dreg of society who perpetrated this terrible act needs the same doing to them. They may never be caught but will have on their concience for life.

This is an evil act against a poor, defenseless and innocent dog. There is no excuse for such an horrific act of animal cruelty. The person or persons responsible this crime should be jailed for 10 years without parole. The laws on animal cruelty are to light. Harsher penalties will deter others.

How can people be so cruel

CLARE

21/03/2012

WHERE WAS THE "DOGGIE SITTER" ?????

Shar-pei owner

21/03/2012

i agree with everyone here saying WHERE WERE THE OWNERS AT!!
if you say she was "doggie sat' wouldnt you make sure it was with someone who wouldnt leave her alone for over a day. that is cruel.
some people should never have pets. Im sad for the owners, it is truly sickening. but look after your pets properly.

I send my thoughts and well wishes to the preston family, such a horrble thing to experience and especially for the children. I dont understand what motivates someone to enter a property that is not theirs and murder a family pet. when my pooch died of old age (fell into our pond and drowned @ 13) it killed me and shattered my family, can only imagine how the family must feel.
warm wishes!

I agree Robbie. Where are the minders of the dog. It annoys me intensely how everyone wants a dog or cat but go away regularly and cannot take their pet along. So many dogs get locked up in yards their whole lives with no exercise or attention. This case it just sickening and shameful once again to be human. Purchasing animal laws should be a lot more strict to prevent pets being left alone and put in the wrong hands of these sick, cruel sickos. I prey they find these scum of the earth and justice is for once passed down.

Sasha

21/03/2012

Deborah.
I was not judging the owners I just think in general dogs should not be left alone when their owners go away as I have witnessed this quite a bit, that is what I meant now you have the full story!!

Go back and crawl under a rock, the dog was being babysat, if you bothered to read the full article!

20/03/2012

So sad and even worse the offender is still walking amongst us. Sickening. The dog was being looked after by a neighbour not in its yard my parents live over the back fence and they heard nothing nor did their German Shepherd send off any alarms. Scarey stuff lucky it wasnt a person.

There really are no words that convey just how I feel towards people capable of this level of cruelty to defenseless beings. I believe that they, upon being caught need to be severely punished including a minimum of five years incarceration as well as the recommended fifty thousand dollar fine. For anyone who would consider this to be too severe a punishment, I would recommend they reevaluate their morals and level of sensitivity. This innocent dog was tortured to death and there will never be any excuse for this horror. May these creatures be caught and made to pay for what they've done.

Ann

20/03/2012

Its sickening! What is going on in the minds of the perpetrators? Hope they get caught and severely dealt with. If anyone has any idea who it was their conscience should make them report them. And I wouldn't call them animals as animals don't behave like this just for 'fun' or some kind of gratification. I hope that karma catches up with them one day!

sid

20/03/2012

They should get harder penaltys why only 5 years prision .a animal is no diffrent from a human you kill a human you get life so why.not start giving animal killers life behind bars to

Caz

20/03/2012

I think they should be more then fined for this people that do this to animals will soon turn this brutal attack to people looks like killers in the making.

Anne Jackson

20/03/2012

I agree with Al but disagree with Muzza. Muzza , you called these "things"
animals. Animals only hurt each other if they need out of self defence or survival etc, to not because it suits them to do it, Al's idea would make them think twice before doing it again if someone was made as an example which would have to be publically advised so they couldn't say they didn't know the penalties.

20/03/2012

The sad thing is that this person/people (I would guess more than 1) will get away with it.

Deborah

20/03/2012

Sasha, the dog was not left home alone by the owners, it was suppose to be being doggy sat. You do not know the full story, so you should not judge the owners so harshly.

Jo

20/03/2012

I hope that the catch the people that did this and that they are punished to the full extent of the law!
I also would be interested to know what happened to the person that was meant to be looking after it? It sounds like nobody had even checked on it for almost 2 days - that too is neglect of an animal and if I were the owners I would be furious! I always put my animals is a pet motel when we go away where I know they will be safe and cared for.

MOETHEMAGPIE

20/03/2012

The penalties under the Animal Welfare Act for such a crime are a fine of $50,000 and five years’ jail if convicted.
The way our justice system is they will probably get no fine and 3 months probation.
We need to stand up and go to court and make ourselves heard, so that they DO NOT get off lightly. Then again we will be lucky if they are even caught.

Sasha

20/03/2012

Back again,
No dog should be left either in backyards if their owners decide to go away that really is not good enough just to have someone come check on them and feed them especially with cruelty on the rise.
LOOK AFTER YOUR PETS THEY ARE A PRIVELAGE NOT A RIGHT!!

Lee

20/03/2012

If we had harder penalties for the cowards who murder and torture innocent animals maybe things like this won't happen. They should be treated as murderers not just fined!!! To just fine someone for horrendous acts such as this is just ridiculous, there is no punishment in a fine no matter how big where the crime is as serious as this. My thoughts are with the owners to lose a loving pet like that is just so sad.

Sasha

20/03/2012

This is horrific and that puts it mildly, my god these people or are they??
Should be punished HAVE THEY BROUGHT HANGING BACK IN YET??
I as alot of people will be up in arms about this one it is getting that way that even our pets are not safe anymore no wonder the dog sitting buisness is booming people don't want to leave their pets alone anymore!!

al

20/03/2012

A 5 year penalty for such a cold blooded pre meditated cowardly act is being kind ,these people should be put into solitary confinement for 10 years hard labour ,no sympathy for such monsters .Bring back the cane ,give them 10 of the very best (like the good old days ) and we will see how quickly they commit such an act again .No place in society for such people .My blood boils over when I read such articles against such defencless beautiful intelligent animals .Sincerely hope that the dog did not suffer too much .

Robbie

20/03/2012

It appears the poor dog was not discovered for over 24 hours, between Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon. Where were the people who are supposed to be looking after him ???????It sounds like it was left alone for the weekend. Cruelty again but the people who killed the dog should be severly punished. They are definitely mentally ill.

Muzza

20/03/2012

Such a calous and gutless attack on a small defenceless pet. I hope that the animals that did this are found and the maximum penalty is emposed.
